How Much Does a 14K Gold Rope Chain Cost? Real Prices by Width and Length

The honest answer is a range from about a hundred dollars to over a thousand, and the whole spread comes down to two numbers: how wide, and how long.

The short answer, with today's numbers

A solid 14K gold rope chain runs from $117 for a hair-fine 0.8 mm at 16 inches to about $1,258 for a 2 mm at 30 inches. Those are our own prices as of September 4, 2026, with gold trading around $4,485 an ounce. They move with the gold price, so treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.

Here is the spread on the sizes people actually buy:

  • 1.2 mm × 20 in: $263
  • 1.5 mm × 18 in: $340
  • 1.5 mm × 22 in: $421
  • 2 mm × 18 in: $687
  • 2 mm × 20 in: $883
  • 2 mm × 24 in: $1,032

Every one of those is a card price. Pay by wire or Zelle and you skip the card fee; the 2 mm × 20 in, for example, is $857 by wire. The live number for any size is on the rope chain page, and it updates as you change the width and length.

Why width matters more than length

Chain is priced by the gram, and grams scale with the cross-section of the wire, not just its length. Go from 1.5 mm to 2 mm and you have not added a third more gold; you have added closer to double. That is why a 2 mm × 18 in ($687) costs more than a 1.5 mm × 24 in ($446) even though the 1.5 mm is six inches longer.

Length is nearly linear. On a 2 mm rope every two extra inches adds roughly $75. So if you are choosing between two lengths, the difference is small. If you are choosing between two widths, the difference is the whole budget.

What you are paying for at each price

Around $122 to $263. The 0.8 to 1.2 mm ropes. These are pendant chains and layering chains. On their own they read as a fine gold line. Weight is under a gram to about a gram. This is a real solid 14K chain at a price where most stores sell plated.

Around $362 to $446. The 1.4 and 1.5 mm ropes. Visible, bright, still fine enough to go under a collar. This is the width most women's rope chains are, and it is the first chain for most men who want something that shows without announcing itself. Roughly 1.8 g at 20 inches.

Around $687 to $1,032. The 2 mm rope. This is a chain with presence, worn over a tee or on bare skin. About 4.2 g at 20 inches. It is the width we sell most of and the one we would point a first-time buyer at if the budget allows.

Solid versus hollow, and why the cheap ones are cheap

If you see a 2 mm rope chain advertised for a few hundred dollars less than the numbers above, it is hollow. Hollow rope is made from tube instead of wire, so it looks the same width for about a third of the gold. It also dents, kinks, and cannot be repaired once it does. We do not sell it. Everything on our rope chain page is solid through the link and stamped 14K. There is more on this in solid vs hollow gold chains.

How our price is set

We price off the live gold market. The number on the page moves with gold during the day and locks the moment you check out. There is no premium for a wider or longer chain beyond the extra gold in it. Insured, signature-required shipping is included in the price, and the chain arrives in plain packaging.

If you want to see how that compares with the melt value of the gold, how gold jewelry is priced walks through the arithmetic. Or pick a width and length on the rope builder and read the number.
