What hollow means
A solid chain is made from gold wire. A hollow chain is made from gold tube: the same outside diameter with air in the middle. Both are stamped 14K because both are 14K gold; the stamp tells you the purity, not the amount. A hollow 3 mm rope can weigh a third of what a solid 3 mm rope weighs, and gold is sold by the gram, so it costs about a third as much.
That is the whole appeal. You get the look of a heavy chain for the price of a light one.
What goes wrong
Tube dents. Catch a hollow chain on a door frame, sleep in it, let a child grab it, and you get a flat spot that does not come out. Once a link is crushed the chain kinks there permanently. Hollow chains also cannot be soldered properly, because heat collapses the tube, so a broken hollow chain is usually a dead chain. And they wear through: the wall of the tube is thin, and years of rubbing against a clasp or a pendant bail opens a hole.
A solid chain does none of that. It can be bent and straightened, it can be resized, it can be repaired, and when it finally wears out in a few decades it is still worth its weight in gold.
When hollow is fine
Hollow is fine for a chain you will wear a few times a year and take off carefully, and fine for something you are not planning to keep. It is not fine for a daily chain, not fine for a pendant chain, and not fine for anything you want to hand down. If the budget is fixed, the better answer is usually a narrower solid chain instead of a wider hollow one.
What the difference costs, in real numbers
These are our own solid 14K prices as of September 4, 2026. We do not sell hollow, so the comparison is against what you would typically see a hollow chain of the same width advertised at, which is roughly a third to a half.
- 1.5 mm rope, 20 in: $394 solid
- 2 mm rope, 20 in: $883 solid
- 2.8 mm curb, 20 in: $1,832 solid
- 3.4 mm curb, 20 in: $2,911 solid
- 3 mm Figaro, 20 in: $1,375 solid
So a solid 2 mm rope costs about what a hollow 3 mm rope does. Same money, and one of them will still be a chain in ten years.
How to tell which you are holding
Weigh it. A 20 inch 2 mm rope in solid 14K should be somewhere around 4.2 grams; a hollow one will be well under half that. Press a link between your fingernails: solid will not give. Look at the ends near the clasp for an open link and see if it is open inside. And read the listing. A seller who does not say solid is usually not selling solid.
